For dramatist Park Hyeon-suk, the 1980`s was a period of rebirth, when she resumed her activities as a playwright after a dormancy of ten years. Her plays written during this period, therefore, provide an essential key to understanding her dramatic world. This paper analyzes two of Park`s works written during the 1980`s, A Brilliant Legacy and The Woman`s Castle, in an attempt to go beyond the limited scope of traditional studies largely centering around the theme of the dramas and explore the dramaturgical techniques employed to create certain aesthetic effects on stage. The ultimate objective of this study is to shed some light on a desirable direction of dramaturgy for stage production. A Brilliant Legacy is a dramatization of the troubled life of a conscientious family wading through the turbulence of Korea`s modern history, highlighted by the Korean Independence Movement, the 4.19 Democratization Movement, and the Korean War. A mix of realistic and epic-dramatic techniques characterizes the dramaturgy. An objectification or historicization of the events can serve to present the rather long-winded family history more effectively, which will also enhance the aesthetic effects of the stage production. A lack of focus in the plot and failure to create sufficient dramatic tension are the obvious flaws of the work. Dramaturgic techniques are called for to attract and maintain the attention of the audience. The Woman`s Castle is concerned with the crisis of a family brought about by the husband`s extramarital affair. The drama presents the wife`s patience and sacrifice as a way of dealing with the crisis, representing the traditional male-centered views of patriarchal society. The drama is written in a realistic style, but flawed logical relationships in the plot of events and lack of consistency in the presentation of dramatis personae remain as shortcomings of the play to be overcome by appropriate stage production techniques. In the 1980`s, Park attempts to enter a new style of playwriting. In A Brilliant Legacy, she emerges from her usual scope of themes and styles and extends her concerns to include the nation`s history with partial introduction of epic style techniques. But in her subsequent work, The Woman`s Castle, she goes back to family matters in theme, and to realism in style. Her attachment to family issues is likely to have to do with her childhood experience and her service in the family court: as a child, she was brought up by her single mother, and as an adult, she served as an arbitrator for a family court, which probably led her to appreciate the value of family. It appears that such experiences and realizations remained as a consistent theme in her creative activities.
