Even though Mad Fury the one of Yeom Sang Seob’s earlier novels, has the similiar characteristics with his another canons, it’s literary value hasn’t been evaluated. This thesis intends to revise that problem through the detailed reading on work itself. For this purpose, this thesis looks into the meaning of modern space and the aspect as the modern ‘female’ domestic novel.
First, ‘Western-style house’ is the physical analogy of Min Byung Cheon’s family, It shows not only the fall of middle class’s family in colo nial society but also Keong Ok’s destiny. The dynamics and contradiction around the 'exhibition grounds' characterizes the surface, distorted mod ernization at colonial period. Both spaces play the mutual supplement each other.
Second, this novel is deployed in the conflict between step-mother and daughter. Because these women pursue the sexual desire or money, we can say that this novel is the ‘modern’ and 'female’ domestic novel. However, their desires are not complex but unitary, so can’t help being frustrated. Of course the writer’s negative vision about ‘new woman’ and neutral world-view hinder this novel in accomplishing modern form of desire on female's stand point.
Instead of the consideration about woman’s modern desire, the writer finds the new possibility from characters who are outside familial order. But this new order doesn't have concrete shapes, and it is based on the universal humanism like morality or fidelity.
