시민 삶에 활력을 더하고 ‘재밌는 도서관’을 만들기 위해 전문가와 시민이 한 자리에 모였다.

 

강기정 광주시장은 지난 27일 오후 시청 다목적홀에서 23번째 월요대화를 열고 도서관 효과, 실태 분석, 발전 방향 등에 대해 이야기 했다.

 

이날 대화에는 강기정 시장을 비롯해 박주현 전남대 문헌정보학과 교수, 손지혜 ㈔한국도서관협회 인문사업팀장, 심명자 ㈔대한독서문화예술협회 이사장, 심옥숙 ㈔인문지행 대표, 정미라 전남대 인문학연구원장, 주홍 예술치료학 박사, 최해솔 북시즈닝 회원(전남대학교 학생), 광주시 김광진 문화경제부시장·김요성 문화체육실장·송경희 시립도서관장 등이 참석했다.

 

대화에 앞서 송경희 시립도서관장은 광주시 도서관 현황과 주요성과, 도서관 활성화 방안(도서관 확충 및 리모델링 등 환경개선, 독서 생활화 서비스 강화) 등을 설명했다.

 

박주현 전남대학교 교수는 ‘누구나 갈 수 있는 도서관’, 소외계층을 위한 ‘흑인 전용 도서관’을 건립에 힘쓴 미국 ‘앤드루 카네기(Andrew Carnegie)’ 사례를 소개하고 “광주 시민은 독서에 대한 긍정적인 효과는 인식하고 있지만 긍정적인 경험과 인식이 부족하다”며 “도서관은 만남의 장소가 돼야 한다”고 말했다.

 

이를 위한 프로그램 참여자 수 향상과 홍보 강화, 독서의 즐거움 향상을 위한 내실 있는 도서관 운영 방향 등을 제안했다.

 

이어진 토론에서 참석자들은 “도서관의 문턱을 낮춰야 한다. 시대가 변한 만큼 도서관도 시민 수요에 맞춰야 한다”며 도서관의 변화를 강조했다.

 

심옥숙 인문지행 대표는 “책이 일상화된 도시로 가기 위해 도서관 마다 특화된 주제를 가지고 프로그램을 운영해야 한다”며 “아이들을 데리고 오는 부모에게 도서관의 재미란 아이가 많은 걸 얻을 때이고, 누군가에게는 삶의 가치를 찾게 해줄 때다. 다양한 계층을 반영한 다양한 프로그램과 전문인력 배치가 중요하다”고 밝혔다.

 

주홍 예술치료학 박사는 “주위에 아프고, 어려운 사람들과 책으로 소통한다. 그들이 ‘수다의 주인공’이 되게 하면 삶의 가치와 재미를 찾아가는 많은 사례를 본다”며 “책을 매개로 운영되는 다양한 ‘독서 동아리’ 활동은 자연스레 시민교육과 연결되고 광주라는 공동체를 지켜내는 보이지 않는 힘이 될 것이다”고 말했다.

 

독서동아리 ‘북시즈닝’ 회원인 대학생 최해솔씨는 “어릴 적부터 엄마와 주말마다 찾은 도서관은 제게 또 다른 집이다”며 “시간적 여유 있는 대학생‧청년들의 낮은 독서량을 높이기 위해 이들을 대상으로 하는 참여 콘텐츠가 많아지고, 지역의 도서관이 거리와 상관없이 ‘찾아가고 싶은 도서관’이 되길 바란다”고 말했다.

 

최해솔씨의 어머니 류현주씨는 “주말마다 어린 아이들과 함께 도서관을 다니며 꿈을 키웠는데 이제는 주말에 카페를 간다”며 “도서관이 편안한 분위기의 북카페처럼 사람들과 소통하고 즐길 수 있는 공간이 되길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

 

도서관 프로그램 활성·다양화를 지역작가 낭독회, 독서 동아리 지원, 주제별 콘텐츠 발굴, ‘북쇼’ 등 찾아오는 도서관 분위기 전환을 위한 제언과 작은도서관 운영 방향에 대한 논의도 이어졌다.

 

손지혜 한국도서관협회 인문사업팀장은 지역 도서관과 서점이 함께 독서 생태계를 만들어가는 ‘책의 도시 전주’, 순천시의 1인 1책 쓰기 사업 등 타지역 우수사례를 소개하고 “도서관과 책을 산업화와 연계해 지역 이미지 제고와 관광 활성화도 가능하다”고 말했다.

 

정미라 전남대학교 인문학연구원장은 “전문가·시민으로 구성된 운영위원회 운영, 민·관·학 네트워크 구축 등을 통해 테마별 특화된 콘텐츠 개발 방법을 제안하고 싶다”며 대학에서 운영 중인 다양한 인문강좌를 소개했다.

 

심명자 대한독서문화예술협회 이사장은 작은도서관 태동부터 현재까지의 연혁과 지자체 지원방식에 대해 이야기 하고 “장기적 관점에서 작은도서관 지원 기준을 명확히 하고, 소수이지만 운영이 잘 되는 시설은 지원을 확대하고 바꿔 근접한 거리에서 시민들에게 휴식과 독서, 만남의 장이 될 수 있도록 전환해야 한다”고 강조했다.

 

강기정 시장은 “시대가 변하면서 도서관이 주는 의미와 가치, 시민이 찾고 시민이 누릴 수 있는 도서관이란 어떠해야 하는가에 대한 고민의 답을 찾아가는 과정이었다”며 “인문 콘텐츠 발굴 등 대화에서 나온 다양한 의견은 일상의 민주주의가 실현되는 ‘포용도시 광주’의 중요한 밑거름이 될 것이다”고 말했다.

 

강 시장은 이어 “건립 예정인 광주 대표도서관을 포함한 도서관의 역할을 고민하고, 시민들이 원하는 재밌는 도서관을 만들기 위해 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
